Ab initio modelling of the effects of varying Zr (Ti) concentrations on the atomic and electronic properties of stoichiometric PZT solid solutions

2017

Abstract Lead zirconate titanate Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 solid solution is considered as one of the most advanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials. Consequent variation of Zr (Ti) concentrations significantly affects the atomic and electronic properties of PZT structures. To perform ab initio modelling of different morphologies for lead zirconate titanate, we are using approach of hybrid density functional B3PW as implemented in CRYSTAL14 computer code. In this study, we are performing large-scale calculations of such PZT parameters as optimized lattice constants, atomic charges and bond populations, as well as band structure (e.g., band gap) and density of states.

Rainfall energy harvester

2015

This chapter provides a detailed study on the harvest of the energy contained in raindrops by means of piezoelectric transducers. The energy harvester has the role of an electric source, able to recharge storage devices of small electronic components, such wireless sensors, by using the vibrational energy released by the drops hitting the transducer, reducing in such a way the chemical waste of conventional batteries. In technical literature, diverse studies agree on the level of suitable generated voltage on the electrodes of a piezoelectric transducer subjected to rainfall, but a complete characterization on the supplied power is still missing. This work, also to limit optimistic forecast…

CO2 laser-induced structure changes in lead zirconate titanate Pb(Zr0.58Ti0.42)O3 sol–gel films

2003

Based on absorption spectra of lanthanum modified lead zirconate titanate Pb0.9La0.1(Zr0.65Ti0.35)O3 (PLZT10/65/35) ferroelectric ceramics an idea of local and selective treatment of lead zirconite titanate Pb(ZrXTi1−X)O3 (PZT) sol–gel film in the multi-layer structure by CO2 laser radiation was formulated. The possibility to obtain PZT perovskite film on the SiO2/Si substrate by irradiation with CO2 laser was shown experimentally. X-ray studies revealed the PZT perovskite structure ratio growth at the expenses of pirochlore structure with an increased power density of laser radiation.

Using the methods of radiospectroscopy (EPR, NMR) to study the nature of the defect structure of solid solutions based on lead zirconate titanate (PZ…

2014

The nature of intrinsic and impurity point defects in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics has been explored. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods, several impurity sites have been identified in the materials, including the Fe 3+ -oxygen vacancy (VO) complex and Pb ions. Both of these centers are incorporated into the PZT lattice. The Fe 3+ -V paramagnetic complex serves as a sensitive probe of the local crystal field in the ceramic; the symmetry of this defect roughly correlates with PZT phase diagram as the composition is varied from PbTiO 3 to PbZrO 3 . NMR spectra 207 Pb in PbTiO 3 , PbZrO 3 ,…

Harvesting rainfall energy by means of piezoelectric transducer

2013

In this paper a detailed study on the piezoelectric energy harvesting of rainfall is presented. Different features have been taken into account in order to define the limits in this energy harvesting. Only commercial transducers have been considered: a lead zirconate titanate and polyvinylidene difluoride transducer.

The nature of the defect structure of solid solutions based on lead zirconate titanate (PZT): Evidence from EPR and NMR

2013

The nature of intrinsic and impurity point defects in lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics has been explored. Using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods several impurity sites have been identified in the materials, including Fe3+-oxygen vacancy (VO) complex and Pb ions. Both of these centers are incorporated into the PZT lattice. The Fe3+-VO paramagnetic complex serves as a sensitive probe of the local crystalline field in the ceramic; the symmetry of this defect is roughly correlated with PZT phase diagram as composition is varied from PbTiO3 to PbZrO3. Nonresonant hole burning spectroscopy of the relaxor ferroelectric PLZT

2002

Abstract The polydispersive dielectric response of a lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate relaxor ferroelectric was studied using nonresonant hole burning (NHB) spectroscopy. The dynamic heterogeneity of this material was evidenced by the fact that it was possible to burn frequency-dependent spectral holes. The maximum position of the spectral holes depended on the square root of the pump frequency Ω . The refilling of the spectral holes was monitored subsequent to excitation using various pump frequencies. The refilling data could be collapsed onto a master curve by re-scaling them, again, using Ω −0.5 as scaling factor. The refilling time was found to be much longer than the time sc…

The strain response of piezoelectric multilayer actuators under combined action of electric field and in-plane uniform load

1997

Abstract The driving field governed strain of lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric multilayer actuators have been made within the 107 N/m2 stress and the 3 · 106 V/m triangle-like upward-down-ward driving voltage. A slow strain component as well as a specific relaxation pattern are detected being additional to the periodic part and attributed to the trapped space charge effects favored by nonuniform electric field of the multilayer.

Interface Effects in Ferroelectric Thin Films

1998

Dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric characteristics in sol-gel derived and pulsed laser deposited (PLD) lead zirconate titanate (PZT), La modified lead titanate (PLT) and zirconate titanate (PLZT) ferroelectric thin films are investigated focusing on maintenance of thin film ferroelectric (FE) properties in a variety of thin film-electrodesubstrate interfaces. Interferometric studies of piezoelectric response of the heterostructures were performed with respect to a DC electrical bias and AC measurement frequency. The asymmetry of piezoelectric coefficient (d33) hysteresis, diminished values of d33, frequency-displacement and spot size — deformation behaviour in the ferroelectric het…

Giant lateral electrostriction in ferroelectric liquid-crystalline elastomers

2001

Mechanisms for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy are essential for the design of nanoscale transducers, sensors, actuators, motors, pumps, artificial muscles, and medical microrobots. Nanometre-scale actuation has to date been mainly achieved by using the (linear) piezoelectric effect in certain classes of crystals (for example, quartz), and 'smart' ceramics such as lead zirconate titanate. But the strains achievable in these materials are small--less than 0.1 per cent--so several alternative materials and approaches have been considered. These include grafted polyglutamates (which have a performance comparable to quartz), silicone elastomers (passive material--the constri…
